Nurturing Connections: The Power of Self-Awareness in Building Meaningful Relationships
May 22, 2024
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” Genesis 2:18 (NIV)
God created us to be in a relationship.
After naming all the animals, God saw it was not good for Adam to be alone. God saw that something was missing.
I am not sure if Adam saw it that way, remember he was in perfect union with God. What more could he want?
But God always sees our need.

So, He created Eve. A wife, a companion, a helper. Adam was amazed when he saw her. He exclaimed, “Finally! Bone of my bone, flesh of my flesh!” (Genesis 2:23, MSG).
In other words,” YOWZA!”
But things got complicated, as relationships do.
The enemy came in, distorting the truth as he always does. From that moment on, everything fell apart for all mankind, creating a ripple effect. Breakdown in communication, deception, guilt, shame, fear, finger pointing, blaming.
Nothing has changed since the garden.

Throughout life, we will encounter many relationships. Wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, co-worker. Some people enter our lives for a short time, while others last a lifetime
If we want to have great relationships, must cultivate great relationships!
One of the most crucial aspects of any sustainable relationship is open and honest, complete communication. Without this, there is no hope that it will last.
When people feel safe in their beliefs and desires, they communicate openly and honestly with each other.
For a healthy relationship to thrive, both individuals need to have a balanced sense of self and awareness of their needs. We need to stop shifting blame, pointing the finger, and look at our inner motivations. Examine our thoughts, feelings, triggers from the past, desires, and needs. Shift our focus off the other person to ourselves.

Communication between individuals is the key to cultivating lasting relationships. One key to effectively communicating with others is to be open and honest with yourself. Self-awareness unlocks the door to meaningful relationships. One way to get honest with yourself is through journaling.
Journaling offers a multitude of benefits.
It serves as a powerful tool for self-reflection, allowing you to gain deeper insights into your thoughts, emotions, and experiences.
Through the act of writing, you can clarify your thoughts, set goals, and identify areas for personal growth. Journaling offers a safe and private space to express your feelings, reducing stress and promoting well-being.
It can enhance your problem-solving skills by encouraging you to explore new perspectives.

Try this exercise to practice being more in tune with your thoughts and feelings.
Journaling is a personal and straightforward exercise that everyone can take. The aim is to write all the issues, lies, or dishonest thoughts, feelings, and worries you have about the relationship truthfully.
To get started, set a timer for 12 minutes.
✅Turn off any distractions - phones, social media access, and external distractions.
✅ Take pen to paper, and just write.
✅Write in a ‘stream of consciousness’ style - without worrying about punctuation, spelling, or what anyone else would think. This exercise is for you.
✅Be open, honest, and leave nothing out.
✅If you have a BIG emotion, write it down. Ask yourself, “Where is God in this emotion?”
After 12 minutes are up, you have a choice.
You can step back and review what you wrote, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal new truths about yourself and the relationship. Talk to Him about it, seeking His wisdom and guidance.
Or you can throw the page away. Don’t read it, but acknowledge what came up, and continue with your day
